Perennials with interesting foliage colors and textures brighten up the border of this shady sunken patio.  Species were chosen for their suitability to the deep shade, heavy deer browsing, and thick clay soils of this challenging site. The crumbling brick patio was replaced with flagstone and the extensive retaining walls were rebuilt for improved stability and more level soil, using entirely reclaimed stone from a 1-mile radius.
